This is not actually an assignment that I am being graded on, but a project that we are working on in eco-club. It is still an ongoing project, but we are about to complete our last stages. For the last couple of months, we have been trying to find ways to make our school more eco-friendly. One way to do that is by doing a waste audit. A waste audit will allow us to see the waste we create so we can see what we need to do to get rid of it. We have been working with the Maui Huliau foundation to complete this project and are planning to do it next Tuesday. For this project, I think I use my civic literacy and engagement skills. That is because this whole project is to make our community a better place. We are doing this to cut down on waste and make our schools’ ecological footprint a bit smaller. I am very proud of how much the eco-club has worked to get this done. We have been putting a couple of hours in each week to get everything ready so it can happen smoothly. We have had to email and communicate with a lot of people outside of the school, which is something that I haven’t really done before. I was able to learn how to communicate with people in a way to get them interested and want to be involved. The hardest thing about this project is that it is taking place during COVID-19. We have had a lot of setbacks because of it, and it is very hard to find a day that we can all meet in person to get it done. I have learned a lot about the environment and the ways how humans have impacted it. We are constantly destroying our planet and we need to do something about it. Even though this may seem small, it can lead to more things. I think this project will really help me with my senior project and internship. I now know how to reach out to people from the community and how to organize events.
