For this assignment, we had to write a poem directed towards an object. It could be any object that had any sort of relevance or meaning to our life. It had to be about a page long and was written similar to how a letter would be but in poem form. I chose to write my poem about a shell that I had found a couple of weeks before. I think the skill that I had to use the most for this assignment was my communication skills. Poetry is all about getting your message across, even though you may not be stating it specifically. Poetry can mean something completely different to the author than it does to the reader, but all that matters is that the piece makes anyone who reads it feel something. This is my favorite poem that I have written so far, and I think it shows the improvement I have made from the beginning of the class. I feel that I was really able to do what the assignment asked me to do. I also got good feedback from the teacher which is usually rare in his class. When you write poetry, you will not always achieve what you want to. When you don’t get your point across, you learn not to do that again. Our teacher gives very specific feedback so I am always able to learn something from each assignment. The hardest thing about the assignment was actually picking what object I was going to write about. I had to make sure that it actually had meaning and wasn’t just something random. Once I chose the shell, it was fairly easy to start the poem. After I turned the poem in, Mr. Wood gave really good feedback, so I was able to work on the poem even more. After going over it many times, I don’t think I would actually change anything about it. To be able to write this poem, I had to learn from my mistakes from past poems. I learned what works and doesn’t, and how to really get my point across to the reader. In this class we are constantly writing poems and getting feedback, so each poem we write usually gets a bit better. I’ve learned how to use more imagery and incorporate more details into my poems and really just bring them to life.
