Name of Assignment: Quiz 1 Subject: Precalculus Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. Nelson
Description of Work/Assignment: This assignment was the first quiz that I had in this class. It was like any other quiz that I have had, but the nice thing about it was that I had five tries. It was twelve questions that consisted of the work that we had gone over in the first couple of lessons. I took the quiz three times, each time getting a better score and eventually getting 100%. I was also able to complete the quiz faster each time.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why? I chose self directional skill, because for this assignment I felt that I had to be very self directed. Since we have distance-learning right now, all of my quizzes are online. For this specific class we are allowed to take the quizzes whenever, as long as we finish it by the due date. We also get five tries to get the best score that we can. Since I knew that I could do it more than once, I made sure to do my first try the day before it was due, so I could have enough time to redo it. I also had to make sure that I gave myself enough time in my schedule to do it multiple times if needed.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why? I am most proud that in the end, I got a 100% and that it only took me three times. It was my first quiz of the year so I didn't really know what to expect. Before I took it for the first time, I thought I was definitely going to have to take it all five times. Each time I took the quiz it got easier because I understood what the questions were asking even better. I also stopped making some of the silly mistakes that I had made in previous tries.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment? I developed my self directional skill because I saw how much it helped me when I used it correctly. I made sure not to procrastinate and give myself enough time. It made it a lot less stressful, and easier for me to complete. It also made it possible for me to take it multiple times until I got the score that I wanted. I know now how nice that feels, so I will definitely be doing the same in the future.
What was most difficult about completing this task? I think the hardest thing about this assignment was that it was the first quiz. The first of everything in a class is always the hardest for me, because I never know what to expect. It also makes me a bit more nervous, so it adds another factor to it. The quiz itself wasn't that hard, rather my nerves. Having five tries though, helped me feel better and calmed me down a bit.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do different? If I could have started over I would probably review my homework more before I started the quiz. The five tries were kind of good and bad because it made me forget to study. I didn't think it was really necessary, but now I realize it is. I have had a couple of quizzes since then and each time they get easier. I have started to study more, and I am now getting a 100% on my first try. Other than studying more beforehand, I don't think there would be anything that I would really do differently.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past? Directly it related to what I had learned in the two weeks before the quiz. It was on the first three lesson in our textbook, so I had to apply everything that I had learned from that, in the quiz. It also relates to math classes I have had in the past, because a lot of the concepts at the beginning of this course was a review. Lastly, I have had a lot of quizzes, which have somewhat prepared me for this one. They have helped me to realize how much studying is important, and how taking your time and not overthinking the questions helps.
How can you apply this to future learning? The math that I learned at the beginning of the year has helped me so far in my class, and will probably for many math classes to come. As I said on my other page, math builds on itself, so everything you learn from first grade on, helps with everything new you learn. I have also taken how much studying helps with quizzes from this quiz. I have already started to study more, which has eased my nerves and helped my scores.
