My driving question is “how can I counteract the harmful effects of hagfish traps on marine life?” This question stemmed from my interest in the environment and ways to solve environmental problems. This project also came from my internship that I had this past summer. I worked with an environmental group that helped to rescue sea turtles and keep the beaches and reefs clean. I chose these topics for my internship and project because it is what I want to do in the future. I would love to be a conservationist and help the environment in any way that I can. My plan for this project had four main steps. First we would have to collect the hagfish traps from Lanai. After this we had to figure out a cost efficient way to get the theme back to maui. Once on Maui, we could start to photograph them and analyze them. With the photographs we then would be able to sort them into groups to find out where the traps were coming from. My product would be the photographed and classified traps. I will give that information to Carl to get it further analyzed by a database created for this project. This not only reaches our community here on Maui, but everyone all over the world. WHen projects like these happen, they are creating change on a larger scale. It starts with a small action of collecting debris, to finding ways to reduce it or cut it out completely. The three main things that I had to work on the most with this project were my self directional, time management, and organizational skills. As this is a student lead project, we are the ones in charge. This has greatly furthered my skill of self direction and communication. I had to set up meetings, make sure I got all my work done, and had a successful product in the end. At first, I had to get a lot of advice from my mentors, since this was fairly new to me. They helped me guide this project and in the end finish what I needed to get done. Time management was the hardest part for me. I usually procrastinate, but with this I had to make sure that I got everything done on time since it was something I couldn’t do in a week. I hit some unexpected hurdles in the beginning with getting the traps to Maui, but in the end it just helped to grow my time management skills even more.
